Before I moved to San Diego, I could probably count on one hand the amount of times I had any sort of Mexican Food. Unless, of course you count after school runs to Taco Bell, which I’m not sure if you can count that as Mexican and you definitely can’t count it as food!
(Now that I think about it, my former Taco Bell habit may get me kicked out of certain nutrition circles, so let’s just keep that between you and me.)
Back to my story, now that I live in the Southwest, Mexican food is a staple. However, the store bought seasonings are full of MSG, a ton of sodium and don’t allow you to play around and find the flavor you love. So I prefer to make my own batch. This recipe will only make a few servings so after you give it a try, multiply the ingredients and make a big batch! You can also skip or cut down on the salt if you are trying to reduce your sodium or have high blood pressure.
Homemade Taco Seasoning
- 1 tbsp. chilli powder
- 1 1/2 tsp. cumin
- 1 tsp. sea salt
- 1 tsp. black pepper
- 1/2 tsp. paprika
- 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp. onion powder
- 1/4 tsp. dried oregano
Combine all ingredients in an air tight container. Use ~2 tbsp. per 1 lb of ground meat.
