Foods to Help Fight Aging

February 26, 2014

We all have the friend that looks 10 years younger than their actual age or seems to have the limitless energy of an 18 year old. We usually chalk it up to great genes, but what you may not know is that the food you choose can have a dramatic impact on your aging process. The phrase “You Are What You Eat” is true; the foods that you put into your body actually become your cells and energize your body. So by making a few simple food choices you may actually slow down the aging process!

Anti-aging Food for Younger Looking Skin

Anti-aging foodsWhen it comes to eating for younger looking skin there are two main things to focus on: Omega-3 fatty acids and hydration.

Omega-3 fatty acids are a key component in the lubrication of your skin, which keeps it soft and supple, and can be found in fish, walnuts, flaxseed, grass-fed beef and some fermented foods.

Water is the key element for getting rid of waste and toxins, which keeps your skin from looking dull. Shoot for half of your body weight in ounces of water per day. Fruits and vegetables are about 90% water so loading up on those will help to increase your hydration, as well!

Anti-aging Food for a Sharper Brain

Anti-oxidants are a critical factor for all anti-aging diets, but flavonoids are the specific anti-oxidant that is linked to maintaining your sharp wit. Flavonoids are found in many fruits but are particularly dense in the cocoa plant, which is where we get chocolate! The darker the chocolate, the more brain-boosting flavonoids, so look for dark chocolate that is 70% cocoa or more.

Anti-aging Food for Stronger Bones

Calcium gets all the credit when it comes to strengthening bones and fighting osteoporosis. However, in order for your body to properly absorb and use the calcium you need to have some magnesium in your diet. Cooked spinach, Brazil nuts, beans and dark chocolate (which seems to cure everything!) are all great ways to add magnesium to your diet.. You can also get magnesium into your body by soaking in Epsom salts, and you’ll get the added benefits that come with it – like helping to fight soreness from your exercise routine, and a relaxing way to wind down your day and promote restful sleep!
