A “Root” To a Restful Night’s Sleep

November 15, 2013

Have you ever lain in bed staring at the alarm clock? Doing the repetitive math for the amount of hours of sleep you will get if you fall asleep right now … OK, how about right now? Or avoided crawling into bed because you know you will just stare at the ceiling so you might as well get caught up on your DVR? If this sounds like you, I would first recommend you try out some pre-bed rituals. Second, I want to introduce you to valerian root, which may be your new best friend.

Valerian is a plant that is native to Europe and Asia. It is a perennial flowering plant, but the medicinal properties are found in the root. It has been used since the times of ancient Greece and Rome as a sleep aid and to ease anxiety. I have also found in my practice, that valerian root is not only effective with helping you fall asleep but also with helping you stay asleep.

Valerian root can be purchased at most health food stores in either liquid or capsule form. I have even heard of some people adding the liquid form to the bath for an extra calming effect, although I have never tried this myself!

SALADA® has combined valerian root with their naturally decaffeinated green tea, passion flower and chamomile to create their soothing SALADA Green Tea Serenity Wellness Tea. It is how I personally wind down every day and promote restful sleep!

And remember, a few small steps can lead to big changes.
