At the beginning of the summer we talked about the importance of drinking more water. Signs of dehydration include dry skin, brittle hair, trouble concentrating and weight gain. It is not only the foundation of every process in your body; it is also the way that your body releases toxins. In fact, when clients come to me to ask about cleanses or detoxes, I always encourage them to start with making sure they are drinking enough purifying water each day. It is a powerful detoxifier and something you can do for a lifetime.
In the same way that a refrigerator full of health food only works if you actually eat it, a bottle of water only works if you actually drink it. This may sound silly, but oftentimes our water bottle becomes more of an accessory than a way to hydrate. We get bored with the bland taste and it becomes a task rather than something we enjoy.
Enter fruit infused water! Adding fruit to your water is a tasteful and healthy way to spice things up and get you to enjoy drinking water. There are a bunch of beautiful recipes that I am sharing with you below, but the basic concept behind fruit infused water is simple:
- Cube or slice your favorite seasonal fruit (typically about 1 cup per half gallon of water)
- Add fresh herbs (I like to gently rub the herbs prior to adding them to the water to release more of the flavor)
- Add fresh water
- Refrigerate for at least 2 hours but up to overnight.
- Enjoy!
Most fruit infused water will last for about 4 days in the refrigerator. If you are going to keep it longer, I suggest simply removing the fruit and herbs after 4 days and the infused water will last for a week or more.
The combinations are endless so I would encourage you to have some fun with it! Here are 9 of my favorite recipes to get you started:
