This time of year the word Resolution is so overused that it begins to lose its meaning. Many think of it as a lofty idea that will be pursued for a few weeks and then discarded when things get back to normal. However, a resolution is really a promise – a promise to yourself and a promise to your loved ones to make a positive change. However, this promise does not come without challenges. Below are a few tips to help you prepare for those challenges and keep your promise once and for all.
- Decide what you want to change and why – the WHY is especially important because it needs to be more powerful than any excuses. When you come up with your WHY write it down and put it in your purse or your wallet. When you find yourself in your car coming up with every reason why you should skip the gym or the grocery store, pull out this piece of paper and remind yourself why it is more than worth the hassle!
- Make a Plan – Be specific and realistic. If you haven’t been to the gym since the Clinton administration, don’t say that you will start going 7 days a week. Remember, small steps when done consistently add up to big results.
- Plan for slip ups. What are you going to do if you fall back into old habits? This is where most of us quit. We are fine and dandy when everything is going according to plan but when we slip up we decide that we are failures and just give up. Don’t beat yourself up for a mistake, instead learn from it and know that you will be stronger for it!
- Create Rewards – for instance if your goal was to save money by brewing your own tea instead of buying the pre made individual servings, see how much you save in one month and use a small portion to buy yourself a new reusable water bottle. It will be a daily reminder of how you made a promise and are sticking to it!
- Tell Someone, Anyone, Everyone! Again, this goes back to making a promise. It’s easy to break promises to yourself but not as easy to let down those around you.
- Start. Sometimes we get stuck in a cycle of waiting for the perfect scenario but never get around to actually taking the first step. If you are looking for the best time to shttps://taracoleman.com/node/44/edittart…Congratulations! You’re here! No day, week, or month is going to be perfect. But if you start now I promise that you will be closer to your goal tomorrow than you are today. Get going!
And remember, a few small steps can lead to big changes.
